Un codage type Huffman ou arithmétique continue la compression des données. La dernière étape de la compression JPEG est le codage de la matrice DCT quantifiée. Ce codage est réalisé sans perte d informations, en utilisant des mécanismes économes. Puisque les blocs contigus sont très corrélés, on peut coder le coefficient continu en position (0,0) en codant simplement la différence avec le coefficient continu du bloc précédent. Cela produira en général un très petit nombre.
