Finger is based on the transport control protocol and USES TCP port 79. The local host opens a remote host connection to the Finger port. The remote host's RUIP (remote user information program) becomes valid for processing requests. The local host sends a request to the RUIP line based on Finger query instructions, and then waits for the RUIP response. RUIP receives the request, returns the response, and initiates the closure of the connection. The local host receives the reply and closes the signal, and then executes the local shutdown.
The finger service only needs to know the remote host name, the user login name, or the user's real name. The basic format is: finger user@host or finger @host. In the following example, the remote host is the finger server at Carnegie Mellon university's computer school, @cs.cs. cmu.edu
