In 1997 IEEE defined the 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) standard, intended to allow wireless connection of workstations to their “base” LAN. The original standard targeted the case in which both the workstation and the LAN were owned by the same entity, providing in fact a wireless extension to an existing, wired LAN.
