To resolve the target, coherent signal processing techniques are necessary, detecting the target echo by virtue of the Doppler shift caused by the target’s radial velocity. Unfortunately, movement of the ionospheric layer by which the radar signal has propagated often causes the clutter spectrum and target to spread in the frequency domain, rendering extended coherent integration pointless. The movement of the ionosphere can be regarded as producing frequency modulation of the radar signal, and thus if this modulation can be estimated the radar signal may be corrected for the ionospheric contamination. The simulated signals are used later to study the time and frequency domain ground clutter suppression. Secondly, this dissertation talks about the time domain filtering, gives the basic theory of time domain filtering and describes the design method of the usually used fifth-order elliptic infinite impulse response (IIR) ground clutter filter. In the time domain, the work focuses on the regression filter. From the orthogonal polynomials fit, this dissertation gives the basic theory of the regression filter for ground clutter suppression and the filtering process using a regression filter.
