telecommunications networks”. The goal of the exercise is to make the students familiar with ns2
simulator as well as TCP’s congestion control and performance. Furthermore, the purpose is to give
an idea of how analytical models can be verified with simulations.
The structure of the study is following: In the first part, instructions for the simulation exercise are
given. The instructions consist of theory explaining TCP’s congestion control algorithms and the
analytical models for TCP’s throughput and description of the main features of ns2 simulator and
Otcl language. Finally, in the second part of the study, simulation results from different scenarios
are presented and analysed.

satellite channels, most of lost package is due to transmission error instead of congestion. We can make some im2
p rovement on TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) fast recovery algorithm. Bymaking the window increase fas2
ter and not enter congestion avoidance too early. We imp rove the throughput of TCP. We use NS2 to simulate the
environment of satellite and internet network, and the results are compared. In simulation, about 10 through2
put in our algorithm is imp roved than TCP2SACK, and that is about 30 imp roved than TCP2Reno.

letter we propose a Robust RED (RRED) algorithm to improve the TCP throughput against LDoS attacks. The basic idea behind
the RRED is to detect and fi lter out attack packets before a normal RED algorithm is applied to incoming fl ows. We conduct
a set of simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed RRED algorithm. The results show that, compared to existing
RED-like algorithms, the RRED algorithm nearly fully preserves the TCP throughput in the presence of LDoS attacks.
