This project was to design and build a photoplethysmograph. This device can be used to determine heart rate using a volume measurement of blood in the arteries and capillaries. This is done by using low levels of infrared light to detect small changes in blood content in the tissues with each heartbeat. A light-emitting diode is used to transmit light into the skin. The iron content in the blood reflects the infrared. A receiver then detects the transmitted light. This information is processed and amplified to provide the pulse waveform. The output form the receiver is proportional to the amount of blood in the tissues. The software analyzes the data to determine a heart rate.
