This is done by using low levels of infrared light to detect small changes in blood content in the tissues with each heartbeat. A light-emitting diode is used to transmit light into the skin. The iron content in the blood reflects the infrared. A receiver then detects the transmitted light. This information is processed and amplified to provide the pulse waveform.
